Key Contributors Towards the Detroit Red Wings Playoff Chances
Few professional sports require the depth of talent to make the playoffs and win a championship like the NHL. These are the most important contributors to the Red Wings playoff chances in 2024-25. π
Detroit has a strong top line, centered by Dylan Larkin, with Lucas Raymond and Alex Debrincat at left and right wing.
A veteran second line is centered by J.T. Compher, with Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko on the wings. How well Kane and Tarasenko hold up over a full season will say a lot about whether Detroit gets a playoff spot or not.
The young Moritz Seider leads a defense that most pundits view as just average. He's the anchor of Detroit's biggest weakness, defending in front of new goalie Cam Talbot, who's not the All-Star he once was but fans hope it's better than the product they've had between the posts the last several years.
Ultimately, a playoff push is entirely possible given their high-octane offense with no shortage of playmakers. However, while GM Steve Yzerman is virtually untouchable in the city where he played 27 seasons, the clock is ticking as they haven't made the playoffs once in his six-year tenure.
Look out for the moves he makes at the trade deadline to bolster the roster, especially on defense. If there's a slow start to the season, it'll be interesting to see how Yzerman handles head coach Derek Lalonde, who received plenty of criticism for missing the postseason in his second season at the helm.
Overall, Detroit has all it takes to be a playoff team but in a league with so much parity, it will be a battle every night.
Detroit Red Wings Strengths & Weaknesses
Looking at the Red Wings roster, there is plenty to be excited about. Still, they have some obvious question marks. These are the strengths and weaknesses that stand out to me.
π Strengths
Power Play: At 23.9%, Detroit had the ninth-best power play in the NHL last season.
Forward Depth: Detroit has what should be a good third line, centered by Andrew Copp, who was a bit of a disappointment, though, in his first season with the Red Wings.
Goalie Depth: It may not be a given that Talbot is the starting goalie for this team, as he will get a strong push from former Blues netminder Ville Husso. Another veteran Alex Lyon, is also around and played 44 games for Detroit last season with 21 wins.
π Weaknesses
Defensive Depth: After the top pairing of Seider and Ben Chiarot, there is much to worry about with Detroit's defense. The Wings have too many old guys and retreads among the bottom four, so getting the puck out of their zone could, again, be Detroit's main problem.
Age: Kane and Taresenko are two of the team's top six forwards, but they are 35 and 32, respectively. Chiarot is 32, while Cam Talbot is 37. That's a lot of age at such key positions.
Penalty Killing: At 79.6%, Detroit was 14th in the league in killing penalties. That needs to improve, but it's hard to see how that'll happen unless Talbot and Husso stand on their heads.

Red Wings Postseason Outlook & Predictions
In the last several seasons, the Red Wings simply haven't been good enough to make the playoffs while also not being bad enough to get any NHL lottery draft picks.
Detroit needs to somehow get over that hump of respectability and get into the postseason this time, and I think they'll find a way to get that done.
Yeah, having to rely so much on older guys such as Kane and Tarasenko is a worry, but between them, they have five Stanley Cup rings, with Tarasenko coming off a championship season with Florida.
I think the Red Wings will get good enough goaltending from Talbot and Husso, and just enough scoring and defense, to make the playoffs.
Red Wings Season Prediction
Based on my research and analysis on this page, I'm predicting the Red Wings to finish the regular season with 44 wins and 97 points. That will be enough to make the NHL Playoffs in 2024-25. However, I don't think they'll make a run at a Stanley Cup, though they could win a series or two.
Red Wings Playoff Chances FAQs
Detroit is +126 to make the playoffs, at DraftKings. Based on implied probability, oddsmakers give the Red Wings a 44.2% chance at making the postseason in 2024-25. These odds are fluid throughout the season, so they will change weekly between October & April.
Detroit has won 11 Stanley Cups as an Original Six NHL franchise, the most of any American-based team. The last time they won The Cup was in 2008, under coach Mike Babcock, overcoming a strong Penguins team. The Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the postseason's Most Valuable Player, went to Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg for his 27 points.
The Red Wings Stanley Cup odds are +4000 at DraftKings, which is the 18th-shortest odds to win the NHL's ultimate prize. Using implied probability based on those odds, Detroit has a 2.4% chance to win The Cup in 2024-25.
