Why the Michigan Wolverines Will Make the College Football Playoff in 2024

Yes, the Wolverines can still make the College Football Playoff but if you ask this question preseason, the answer is simple: Yes, they have a chance behind a stout defense and powerful run game. However, that question is much harder to answer now that we've seen the product on the field.

Still, we're only two weeks into the season and, yes, Michigan looked miserable against No. 2 Texas – but we're talking about arguably the best team in the country.

It was a nightmare matchup for a Wolverines team that's replacing nearly every offensive starter for the first time in more than three seasons. On top of that, its opponent returned an abundance of production on both sides of the ball, including a future NFL quarterback, something U-M desperately misses from last year's team.

While Michigan hosts USC in two weeks, it has a game to work out some kinks against non-conference Arkansas State in Week 3. And while everyone complains about the QB play (me included), Davis Warren was the highest-graded player on the team last week – albeit a rating still below 80.

With the riches of star power on the Wolverine defense and their toughest opponent out of the way (that's right, Buckeyes), there's time to right the ship, get the offensive line to gel, and return to the postseason.

Why The Michigan Wolverines Might Miss The Playoffs

The Michigan football team that won the National Championship last season is not the same in 2024. After losing their first home game in four years, you knew it would hurt the Wolverines' playoff chances – but nobody expected them to hardly compete in the Michigan vs Texas matchup, losing 31-12 in a game that could've gone much worse.

Is it growing pains for new head coach Sherrone Moore? Or is this team simply not comparable to the last three U-M football squads that made it to the CFP Semifinal?

With a defense that includes three projected first rounders – Mason Graham, Will Johnson and Kenneth Grant – the Wolverines were projected to lean on them and let their offense (replacing nine starters) figure itself out. However, that was not the case in Week 2, as they gave up chunk play after chunk play, failing to defend the pass or the run effectively enough to impact the game.

What's most concerning, though, is the offense – specifically the quarterback offensive line. While I'm not sure Davis Warren or Alex Orji would start for any other team in the Big Ten, this storied O-Line is a shell of what it used to be and, without it, this team is in serious trouble.

Typically, the best Michigan football teams rely on a strong defense and control possession with a dominant run game. With zero rushing touchdowns and a bottom-100 offense in all categories through two weeks, the main ingredient in U-M's recipe is missing.

Michigan Wolverines History in the College Football Playoff

The Michigan Wolverines are the reigning college football National Champions after defeating Alabama in a semifinal matchup, 27-20, and stomping Washington, 34-13, en route to their first national championship in nearly 20 years.

Michigan has made the last three College Football Playoff semifinals - losing to Georgia during the 2021 season, 34-11, and losing in 2022 to TCU, in one of the more epic college football games in the last decade, 51-45.

Could Michigan make it four years in a row?
