Michigan Wolverines Chances To Win vs Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks and Michigan Wolverines play two entirely different brands of football. Oregon is known for their flashy uniforms, their speed, and their high-powered passing offense that consistently ranks amongst the best in the nation. Compare that to Michigan which has worn similar uniforms for nearly their entire existence, usually have been known for the smashmouth running attack, and focus on building their roster with size and toughness over speed. The Oregon Ducks are currently favored by 3.5 points to win in their first game in Ann Arbor in 17 years in November.

How The Wolverines Win vs The Ducks

Michigan will face Oregon a bit later in the season than some of their other tougher opponents, which could mean Michigan has a bit development out of their offensive and defensive replacements from last year's championship run. Michigan should be the more physical and tough team, they should be able to pound the ball with Donovan Edwards, and they still have one of the most talented teams in college football - it just happens to be a bit of match-up nightmare against an Oregon team that will have a lot more speed. Does that mean Michigan doesn't have a chance? Absolutely not, but it may just be a challenge. However, there is no doubt Michigan is up for the challenge.

  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Strength: Line of Scrimmage
  • ๐Ÿ“‰ Weakness: Team speed

How The Ducks Win vs Wolverines

The Ducks, for the last few decades, have been known for their high-powered offenses. They are expected to continue to be one of the best offenses in the Big Ten behind quarterback Dillion Gabriel, running back Jordan James, and Texas A&M wide receiver transfer Evan Stewart. However, under head coach Dan Lanning, expect to see more effort dedicated towards defense and toughness - two areas that the Ducks desperately need as they enter their new conference.

  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Strength: Offensive firepower and roster strength
  • ๐Ÿ“‰ Weakness: Toughness on the line of scrimmage

History of Michigan Vs Oregon Games

Michigan and Oregon have a very limited history and have only played five times since 1948, when Oregon traveled to Ann Arbor for their first game, a game in which Michigan won 14-0. Since then, they have played just four other games where they have tied 2-2 with their last game in 2007, a 39-7 Oregon win. Now that Oregon has joined the Big Ten conference, we should expect to see some epic match-ups between the defending National Champion Michigan Wolverines and the team with the third-best odds to win the 2024 National Championship - the Oregon Ducks.

Michigan Wolverines Record vs Oregon

Michigan currently holds a 3-2 series win over the Ducks, having won the first three games of the series, while Oregon has won the last two, but it is hard to garner much historical data from their match-ups because outside of the 2003 and 2007 games, there was a 12 and 13-year gap between the first, second, and third games being played.

Something worth noting in a relatively unnoteworthy series is that in their first three match-ups Michigan outscored Oregon by a combined 59-0.

All-Time Best Wolverines Vs Oregon Games

The Michigan Wolverines and the Oregon Ducks have faced each other several times over the years, and while the rivalry isn't as storied as some others, there have been a few notable games between the two programs.

In the only game in the series not decided by double-digit points, the Oregon Ducks won their first time against Michigan and the only time the two teams have played in Eugene, Oregon. A seesaw back-and-forth including a touchdown by Michigan with less than one minute to go ended the game 31-27 handing Michigan their first loss of the season and moving Oregon to 4-0. Michigan's quarterback John Navarre led the game with 360 yards in the air but had two interceptions which gave Oregon just enough to win their first of the series.

Game 2: September 8, 2007

Oregon delivered a dominant performance against Michigan at the Big House, defeating the Wolverines 39-7. The game was notable for Oregon's explosive offense led by quarterback Dennis Dixon, who accounted for four touchdowns (three passing and one rushing) and 368 total yards. The Ducks' innovative spread offense was on full display secured one of the most lopsided victories against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Game 3: October 7, 1948

In the first game that they have played, the Michigan Wolverines beat Oregon 14-0. As defending National Champions, the win over Oregon was part of their 25 game win streak between 1946 and 1949.
