Over/Under

The total (or the over/under) for the game is 46 points at most betting sites, dropping from its original opening of 49. Given that Detroit boosted their defense in the draft & free agency and Seattle hired a defensive-minded coach in Macdonald, the original number was too high. I wrote here that I expected it to go down before Week 4 and it has, settling at a reasonable total.

Moneyline

According to the latest odds, the Lions are -180 and the Seahawks are +164 on the moneyline. This seems appropriate given both teams' winning records entering the matchup.

Point Spread

The spread for the Lions vs Seahawks in Week 4 is currently -3.5, according to Caesars Sportsbook. Typically, home-field advantage is worth two points, but Ford Field has become one of the toughest places to play in the NFL. This line seems appropriate, but I thought the opening at 5.5 was more accurate.

Lions Chances to Win vs Seahawks

The Lions are favored by six points over the Seahawks, giving them over a 70% chance to win based on implied probability. Still, it's the NFL and this game is far from a sure thing despite the odds. So, I broke down exactly how each team can win this NFC matchup.

How the Lions Win vs Seahawks

The Lions have a lethal rushing attack that should combat Seattle's feared passing defense. Since Jared Goff has proven himself capable of making throws down the stretch, Detroit should aim to possess the ball with long drives focused on using Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery creatively to set up Amon-Ra St. Brown & Sam LaPorta to get open off play-action. Defensively, the Seahawks have serious pass-protection problems and the Lions will bring high-pressure rates, led by Aidan Hutchinson, to complement their league-best rushing defense from a year ago. So, the biggest reason Detroit is favored is because its style of play won't need to change to make this a winnable game.

  • 📈 Strengths: Running the ball, play-action, and defending the run
  • 📉 Weaknesses: Defending the pass, young defensive backfield

How the Seahawks Win vs Lions

It's hard to tell what Seattle will be under Macdonald. He is a defensive guru with weapons like Devon Weatherspoon & Tariq Woolen to play in man while he sends blitzers after the QB and relies on his edge defenders to contain the run game. It's never easy figuring out a tricky defensive scheme the first time. While Goff is certainly legit, can he throw out of the dropback if Seattle erases play-action? Ultimately, the Seahawks must get production out of their young backs, Kenneth Walker & Zach Charbonnet, to open up play-action. Without it, Geno Smith will be rushed in the pocket trying to find DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, or Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

  • 📈 Strengths: Defensive backs, tons of untapped young talent, tricky first-year defensive scheme
  • 📉 Weaknesses: Pass protection, play-action scheme
