In the wake of President Biden’s disastrous debate performance last month, Data For Progress released the results of its flash poll, which included head-to-head matchups with nine potential Democratic candidates against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee. Whitmer was among the Democrats listed. None of the Dems finished ahead of Trump in the survey of 1,011 likely voters. However, Trump was only ahead of Whitmer 46% to 44%, with 10% undecided.
Whitmer holds a high approval rating in Michigan. Morning Consult released its quarterly report on gubernatorial popularity on July 24. It showed the two-term Democrat had a net popularity rating of +20.
It all depends on what happens in November. Should Trump return to the White House, then Whitmer would be among the favorites for the Democratic nomination in 2028. However, if Harris were to rally and win, it would almost assuredly keep the Michigan governor from mounting a presidential campaign until 2032.
