Michigan Wolverines Chances To Win vs Ohio State Buckeyes

As is tradition, the Big Ten season ends with the two marquee teams making the field in "The Game" - often deciding who wins the Big Ten and who can stake claim as the winner of the biggest college football rivalry. The 2023 winner of the National Championship, Michigan, faces off against the team with the best odds to make the College Football Playoff, Ohio State, on November 30th in Columbus, Ohio.

Michigan will be playing under a new head coach, Sherrone Moore, a new starting quarterback, and a host of new playmakers. Meanwhile, Ohio State went all in in the transfer portal to augment their team with elite talent to again make a run at a National Championship.

Will the Michigan Wolverines return to playoff under new leadership? Or will Ohio State and Ryan Day be able to get their first win in the series since 2019?

Can Ohio State contain one of the more elite running backs in college football in Donovan Edwards? And can Michigan's dynamic defense still be one of the top units in the country? It will have its work cut out for them against Ohio State.

Despite the point spread favoring the Buckeyes, both teams can win this game. Michigan wasn't favored in 2021 or 2022. Below, I explain exactly how each team can win.

How The Wolverines Win vs Buckeyes

Michigan will have to beat Ohio State by being physical and shutting down their playmakers. Ohio State grabbed elite talent at quarterback, running back, and offensive line during the transfer portal season and have developed some great talent that are now upperclassmen - so limiting their explosiveness on offense will be paramount. Michigan will have 11 games to prepare to play Ohio State and by then we should have a better idea of what Sherrone Moore's team will look like and the inexperience that they have at some positions will be much more developed. Michigan will have an up-hill climb against the Buckeyes, but with three wins in a row under their belt, who is to say they can't keep the streak going?

📈 Strength: Offensive Line and stout defense, especially defensive line and cornerback.

📉 Weakness: There are still a lot of question marks for the Wolverines on offense at quarterback and playmakers, outside of Donovan Edwards at runningback. How will the team gel under new head coach Sherrone Moore and will the NCAA levy any sanctions against the Wolverines that could thwart their season?

How The Buckeyes Win vs Wolverines

Ohio State went out and grabbed quarterback Will Howard from Kansas State; Quinshon Judkins from Ole Miss; safety Caleb Downs from Alabama; and offensive lineman Josh Simmons from San Diego State to bolster a very quality line-up that already included running back TreVeyon Henderson and freshmen phenom Jeremiah Smith. This should be the most quality roster head coach Ryan Day has had in some time in Columbus and should be able to pick up their first win against the Wolverines since 2019. Their playmakers and speed could give Michigan fits, and it looks like it could be the most imbalanced the rosters have been in maybe five or six years.

📈 Strength: Overall roster. Quarterback, running back, offensive line, and secondary are all vasly improved from last season.

📉 Weakness: Toughness. Michigan has been able to overpower the Buckeyes for the last three years by physicality at the line of scrimmage.
