Ranking America’s Most Bikeable States

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Few states have the type of two-wheeled access that Michigan offers. The home of Michigan sports betting also has a host of bike-friendly towns and cities. These opportunities to safely explore on two wheels dot the Great Lakes State, from the banks of Lake Michigan in the west all the way toward the Upper Peninsula to the north.

Many Millennial and Gen Z Americans want to live in cities that are safe for bicycles and pedestrians. BetMichigan.com took a break from reviewing Michigan online casinos to find out which states are the most bike friendly. We factored in population, average bikeable ranking for the top five cities in each state, and Google Trends search interest scores for “bike,” from June 24 to July 24, 2024.

The bike-friendly infrastructure in Michigan is one of the reasons that the Great Lakes State is rated among the most bikeable states in America, according to research from the peopleforbikes.org website.

Michigan ranks seventh overall on our list thanks in large part to towns like Mackinac Island and Harbor Springs, which scored highly on People For Bikes’ city rankings. In fact, People for Bikes rates Mackinac Island as not only the top-ranked bike town in the state, but tops in the nation and in the world. Harbor Springs also scores extremely well, ranking third in the world and in the nation.

How Bike-Friendly is Michigan?

Nationally, Michigan’s bike-friendly score of 106 points ranked seventh overall, sandwiched between No. 6 Montana at 108 points and Oregon at No. 8, with 103 points for the Evergreen State.

Michigan also rates well for having a variety of MI online casino bonuses and mobile sportsbook operators, for those wishing to place a wager.

The leaders in bike friendly infrastructure were Vermont, with a total score of 133 points, followed by Colorado (132 points), Utah (112), Minnesota (110) and Wisconsin (108).

No. 9 Washington State and No. 10 Iowa round out the top 10 with scores of 102 and 97 points, respectively.

When it comes to building infrastructure that’s both climate and people friendly, it seems like the Great Lakes State is among the best nationally. The state’s very bike-friendly small town are a big boost in those rankings.

And it might surprise some to learn that People for Bikes rates Detroit in a tie for No. 12 among 69 cities that have a population of more than 300,000. For a more passive sporting interest, check out our Detroit Lions Super Bowl odds for the NFL season at BetMichigan.com.
