While man’s best friend is considered the superior animal companion by many, others believe that a cat is an acceptable pet to have around the house, including many in the Great Lakes State. Michigan sports betting options such as the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions are not the only popular cats in the state.
International Cat Day is Aug. 8, so BetMichigan.com wanted to know which states love cats the most, according to search interest from Google Trends. We ranked states by combined search interest scores for the phrases “cat cafes,” “cat adoptions,” and “cat breeds.” The searches were done from July 15 to July 22, 2024.

The digital tea leaves known as search interest scores tell us that Michigan is tied for the seventh-highest total of any state when it comes to cat-related subjects. With a search interest score of 86, the home of Michigan online casinos is even with Oklahoma and New Mexico.
National leader Hawaii finished the period in question with a total score of 200.
The other states that finished ahead of Michigan in feline interest were Nevada, which posted a total search interest score of 187, Indiana (124 points), South Dakota (117), West Virginia (93) and Arkansas (87).
Michigan did manage to finish ahead of one state in the U.S. top 10 when it came to cat-related search scores, as the Great Lakes State finished ahead of Alaska’s total of 83 points.
Based on the survey results, it seems like a safe bet to assume that many in the state share a love of our hairball-laden pets. Many Michiganders picking cats as their animal of choice, for whatever reason that may be.
