Favorite Chocolate Candies In Michigan

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

With supermarkets putting out their displays of candy in anticipation of Halloween, many folks find themselves slowing down as they push their shopping carts past the aisles of chocolate treats.

Somewhere in their thinking, those shoppers are ruminating about which of those candies they’d prefer to have left over if, for some reason, they didn’t get to hand all of the Halloween candy to the Trick-or-Treaters. Not that they’d intentionally hold back out of self-interest, but sometimes a couple of candy bars manage to make it to early November.

So, keeping in mind that Halloween is approaching – as well as National Chocolate Day, which conveniently falls on Oct. 28 – BetMichigan.com decided to determine which popular candy is the most popular in the home of  Michigan sports betting promos. Here are our results:

Top Chocolate Candies In Michigan

BetMichigan.com took a break from our Michigan sports betting analysis and used Statista’s research on the most consumed chocolate candy as a starting point. Then, we tuned to Google Trends to search the level of interest in each chocolate candy from Oct. 1, 2022 to Oct. 18, 2023. With this data, BetMichigan.com determined the top three chocolate candies of each state.

Imagine, this is like the Academy Awards but instead of fighting with an envelope to get to the winner, it’s a candy wrapper that’s being torn to get to the winning candy.

“And the winner in Michigan in the category of favorite candy to be eaten ravenously, preferably when no one is looking, is – (pause for drumroll) – the Kit Kat!!!” The audience rises to its feet, clapping furiously.

Supporters of the No. 2 choice, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and No. 3 Twix wear tight smiles as they applaud politely. However, Michigan was hardly alone in its affinity for Kit Kat. In all, the Kit Kat was the favorite chocolate candy in 12 of 50 states.

More About The Kit Kat Bar

Kit Kat, described as a “chocolate-covered wafer bar” falls under the corporate umbrella of Hershey’s in the United States. But it was created by Rowntree's of York in the United Kingdom. Elsewhere in the world, Kit Kat (sometimes spelled KitKat) is produced by Nestle.

As mentioned, in the chocolate calculations, Kit Kat was ranked No. 1 in 12 states, and it was also among the top three in 26 states. However, the national title, at least based on the metrics outlined above, is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. That confection ranked No. 1 in 19 of the 50 states and was ranked among the top three candies in 40 states.

Other candy brands that were ranked No. 1 in at least one state were: Snickers; M&M’s (no specific color); Milky Way; Butterfingers (shout out to Bart Simpson) and Twix.
