Michigan’s Favorite Toppings For Pizza Day

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Feb. 9 is a day that a lot of Detroit Lions fans probably want to skip over entirely since their beloved team won’t be playing in their first Super Bowl that day. For those who choose to eat their feelings, they could call their favorite pizza joint and celebrate National Pizza Day, which this year falls on Super Bowl Sunday.

After checking out the latest Michigan sports betting promo codes, our team at BetMichigan wanted to get their minds off sports for a bit and thought pizza would be a good distraction. So we used Google Trends to rank the five most searched pizza toppings in Michigan. Our rankings cover search interest scores from data pulled during a one-year period, ending Jan. 27, 2025.

Cheese topped our rankings in dominating fashion, just like Tarik Skubal did in unanimously winning last year’s American League Cy Young vote. It’s a no-doubter for most people statewide using Michigan sportsbooks. While many may debate between pepperoni or sausage or green peppers on their pizza, nearly everyone agrees on cheese.

While most people prefer an Italian cheese like mozzarella, we at BetMichigan know better than to put that on our Detroit-style pizza. If we’re making it rectangular, then we’re making it with brick cheese – even though that’s a product that originates out of Wisconsin.

Where To Get Detroit-Style Pizza In Detroit

Detroit-style pizza has caught on nationally thanks to chains like Little Caesars and Jet’s. But if you’re in the Motor City, there are more than a few local places that should be considered in the land of Michigan online casinos.

The first place that comes to mind is Buddy’s Pizza, since that’s where Detroit-style got its start nearly 80 years ago. According to its website, Gus Guerra used steel auto pans to create the signature dish. Besides its original location on Conant Street, there are 15 other Buddy’s across the state.

After selling Buddy’s in 1953, Gus Guerra kept making his creation at the Cloverleaf Bar, now known as Cloverleaf Pizza, which has several locations across the Detroit area.

Another great place to get a Detroit-style pizza in town is Elephant & Co., whose owners branched into pizza after starting in the craft beer business. They have two locations in the Detroit area.
