With the 2025 NFL Draft days away, BetMichigan.com wanted to see who the top Draft steals have been since the 2020 edition across Michigan sports betting. We ranked players who were selected during the second round and beyond based on Weighted Career AV, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.
Rank | Player | wAV |
1 | Jalen Hurts | 69 |
2 | Amon-Ra St. Brown | 47 |
3 | Jonathan Taylor | 45 |
4 | Creed Humphrey | 40 |
T5 | Nnamdi Madubuike | 38 |
T5 | Jeremy Chinn | 38 |
T5 | Michael Pittman Jr. | 38 |
8 | Tee Higgins | 37 |
T9 | D’Andre Swift | 36 |
T9 | Brock Purdy | 36 |
It might be hard to believe it given how well he’s taken to the NFL, but two-time Pro Bowl QB and reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts was once a second round pick out of Oklahoma, going 53rd overall to Philly in the 2020 NFL Draft before racking up 69 AV in 77 games played with the NFC East squad. Of the non-first round selections over the last half-decade, no player has done better (AV wise) than Hurts has in the City of Brotherly Love, thanks in large part to his 85 touchdowns (to 39 interceptions) and 55 touchdowns on the ground since entering the league in 2020.
Overall, Hurts finished ahead of other NFL success stories like Detroit Lions star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, who has 47 AV in 66 games with the hometown team out of USC after getting selected 112th overall in 2021.
St. Brown and his 4,851 career receiving yards and 33 touchdown catches ranked ahead of other top draft steals like Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts (45 AV), Creed Humphrey of the Kansas City Chiefs (40 AV) and a three-way logjam between Jeremy Chinn, Michael Pittman Jr. and Nnamdi Madubuike, who all have 38 AV in their respective careers.
Rank | Team | Average wAV |
1 | Detroit Lions | 13.89 |
2 | Kansas City Chiefs | 13.30 |
3 | Miami Dolphins | 11.21 |
4 | Buffalo Bills | 10.58 |
5 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 10.27 |
6 | Philadelphia Eagles | 10.26 |
7 | Baltimore Ravens | 10.10 |
8 | Chicago Bears | 10.08 |
9 | Pittsburgh Steelers | 10.04 |
10 | San Francisco 49ers | 9.95 |
Since 2018, no NFL team has done better at drafting outside of the first round than the Lions have, with Detroit averaging 13.89 wAV from their picks outside the top 32 spots in the seven-round event.
That figure puts Detroit ahead of the AFC goliath known as the Kansas City Chiefs, who have averaged 13.30 wAV from their picks during that time, while the Miami Dolphins (11.21 average wAV), Buffalo Bills (10.58 average wAV) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10.27 average wAV) also made the cut when it came to the top NFL teams at landing draft day value outside of the event’s opening round.
This year, Detroit will look to add more talent to their star-studded roster when the NFL Draft kicks off from Green Bay on April 24, with the real steals coming on days two and three, when GMs will look to find the next Jalen Hurts or Amon-Ra St. Brown in the latter rounds of the made-for-TV springtime spectacle.
