Each year, a handful of NFL head coaches find themselves on the wrong end of the league’s firing line. But that opens the door for a new cast of sideline leaders to take their place, with several openings across the 32-team collective already.
The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears moved on from their coaches during the season, then two more teams made changes in the aftermath of Sunday’s Week 18 action. So there’s no shortage of openings to fill this offseason, with more coming to catch the attention of Michigan sportsbooks users.
To get a sense of which NFL assistant or former head coach is the hottest candidate to join the league’s head coaching fraternity, BetMichigan.com broke down some hypothetical odds for which coach will get a lead role this offseason.
Candidate | Current Position | Odds | Percent Chance |
Mike Vrabel | Former Titans HC | +350 | 22.2% |
Ben Johnson | Detroit Lions OC | +400 | 20.0% |
Aaron Glenn | Detroit Lions DC | +600 | 14.3% |
Brian Flores | Minnesota Vikings DC | +600 | 14.3% |
Liam Coen | Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC | +1500 | 6.3% |
Kliff Kingsbury | Washington Commanders OC | +1750 | 5.4% |
Joe Brady | Buffalo Bills OC | +1750 | 5.4% |

The Field |

This analysis is exclusive to BetMichigan.com, where Michigan sports betting promos have no offseason. Within 24 hours of the regular season ending, the New England Patriots axed Jerod Mayo as head coach after one season and the Jacksonville Jaguars parted ways with Doug Pederson.
Locally, the 15-2 Detroit Lions have two candidates to become a head coach in the league. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson (above) and his defensive counterpart, Aaron Glenn, are prominent. The dynamic duo, under head coach Dan Campbell, have the club ranked first in the NFL in points scored (33.2 points per game) and seventh in points allowed (20.1 PPG).
Johnson and Glenn are surefire head coaching candidates, but on our list they rank behind former Tennessee Titans head coach and current Cleveland Browns coaching and personnel consultant Mike Vrabel. He checks in at +350 to be the next NFL head coach on our list.
Johnson is +400 and Glenn has +600 odds as the have helped make Detroit Lions Super Bowl odds an enticing proposition. Glenn is alongside Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores on our list.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is next at +1500 followed by two more NFL OCs (Kliff Kingsbury of the Washington Commanders and Joe Brady of the Buffalo Bills) at +1750. Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph are at +2000.
As of now, what we know is that Johnson and Glenn have at least one more game to prepare for with their current team. The Lions have the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and await their opponent in the Division Round, which will be whichever team is the lowest seed left after this weekend’s Wild Card Round. Caesars Michigan Sportsbook has Detroit as the Super Bowl favorite at +290 odds, followed by the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs at +350.
