Each offseason a handful of head coaches find themselves out of a job in the NFL. That opens the door for a new generation of sideline leaders to make their mark in the 32-team league – or for a former head coach to get another chance. These trends are worth tracking for Michigan sports betting.
This year’s cast of head coaches who are new to their positions includes: Raheem Morris of the Atlanta Falcons, Dave Canales of the Carolina Panthers, Jim Harbaugh of the Los Angeles Chargers, Jerod Mayo of the New England Patriots, Mike Macdonald of the Seattle Seahawks, Brian Callahan of the Tennessee Titans and Dan Quinn of the Washington Commanders.
Morris, Harbaugh and Quinn all held the same role with other franchises in the past. The others are first-time head coaches in the NFL.
BetMichigan.com – your source for the best Michigan sportsbook promos – broke down some hypothetical odds for which NFL assistant coach (or unemployed former head coach) could be the next one to take over a franchise in the league.

The current leaders in the chase to be the next head coach in the NFL are acclaimed assistant coaches, including two on the staff of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. These odds are exclusive to BetMichigan, but Michigan sports betting apps offer plenty of other NFL wagers.
Bobby Slowik of the Houston Texans (at +350 odds) is the leader on our odds board, followed by Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions (+400), to take over as a head coach in the near-distant future.
Slowik has transformed Houston’s offense into a tour de force in his year-plus as coordinator. Last season, the Texans earned their first playoff berth since 2019. The on-field growth of second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud in the Space City has been a huge factor.
Johnson has done much the same in the Motor City, spearheading the Lions’ fast-paced offense under head coach Dan Campbell and guiding Detroit to the club’s first division crown since 1991 in 2024. We’ll keep an eye on Detroit Lions Super Bowl odds all season.
A pair of recently fired NFL head coaches are next on the list, former Titans boss Mike Vrabel (+600) and his former head coach in New England, Bill Belichick (+900) in the third and fourth spots.
Other candidates to be the next head coach in the NFL fraternity include Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn at +1000, proving the depth that Detroit has on its coaching staff. Longshots include Klint Kubiak of the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith (+1850 each), then NFL defensive coordinators Brian Flores of the Minnesota Vikings and Lou Anarumo of the Cincinnati Bengals (at +2000 apiece).
At BetRivers Michigan Sportsbook, the Lions have +1400 odds, as of Sept. 18, to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.
